You mean HUMUS. Normally used in organic gardening or just to improve the soil for flower gardens, humus or compost is composted of leaves, organic kitchen scraps such as anything you don't use when making a salad. Definitely NO meat waste. These are added to a composter which should be placed in a sunny location, and water added from time to time. What appears at the bottom of the composter is called 'gardeners gold' in the form of black organic matter. This is HUMUS.

I have two huge composters at the bottom of my garden which are constantly 'cooking' and producing this composted matter to add to my garden soil when I need it. I also add raked up leaves and sometimes small twigs to keep the composted matter aerated. I also add nitrogen from time to time in the forum of urine. It may sounds gross but isn't actually, nitrogen is a key ingredient to the composting process and you can either spend money to buy it, or use your own!

Humus is the amazing end product of the composting process. We use a tumbling composter and add our garden trimmings and kitchen scraps to produce a constant flow of compost about five months of the year. Our season is a little short here in the northern midwest (US). It's hard to understand how all of that stuff will turn into a rich dark compost that has the aroma of a forest floor, it is truly a miracle. We tried just composting in a pile but it soon got away from us and seemed to always be either to wet or to dry and it became difficult to properly aereate the whole pile when it got large. This was when we got our composter from an online seller and are very happy with it. To find out what can be safely composted you can check here. This site also cover a bit of the biology involved in the composting process here.
