Replaced connecting rod on a Briggs & Stratton 12.5 HP now engine will not start.
I check timing and made sure everying thing was in working order but now I turn the key and when it fires it tries to kick the engine in reverse. How do I fix this?

The dots are lined up on the timing gear and camshaft gear. So unless one of my two gears is wrong then I'm pretty sure it's right. Looks like I'm cracking it open again.

The timing marks line up one way
Check your key on the flywheel
Did you reset your valve clearance.
When you put it back together ?

It just seems like it is fireing too early and the crankshaft isn't in the right position to go forward when the spark hits the fuel. I never took apart any of the part governing this so I don't know why this would be happening.

DG, thank you. The flysheel key was not bent, it was cut clean in half. Replaced the key and mower runs like a dream. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem. Took the bottom end off three times to line up the dots. Found a blog where they said to check the flywheel key. If you replaced a rod like I did, its very likely that the flywheel key sheared, and the firing timing is off. Pull the flywheel and see if the key is broken or sheared.
