    OLD Murray Riding Mower Issue
We bought a used Murray riding mower a few months ago for $150. It was a great price & has worked quite well with minimal issues until now. So far it had only need a belt, a new spark plug & some paint.

Now, one of the deck belts shredded & got flung off the deck and THIS is where my problem lies.

With the first belt, we were able to take it to a parts place & they used the OEM number to cross-reference but now we have NO belt since it was shredded to pieces. To add to our frustration, everybody at every lawn mower place we've been to has told us that the mower should run on 1 long belt but it doesn't. It runs on TWO belts, a long one & a short one.

And to FURTHER add to our frustration, our model can not be found ANYWHERE! So I found this forum and am HOPING someone will know something about this mower.

It's a Murray 11hp 36" cut riding mower. The model number is 8-3667 and the date code is 7266.

The codes on the engine are 252707 0133-01 77080211, which based on what I found on the B&S website means the motor is a 77, which I guess means there's a possibility the mower is a 77, assuming it's the original motor.

I really hope someone can help since we just don't know what else to do.

    Thanks a bunch,
    Betty & Joe

I have one about like it (deck is long gone) where ONE belt went to one pulley from the engine pulley... another from that to the other pulley correct?
I would think any GOOD small engine shop could look the numbers up (model numbers off the mower) and get you your belt... BUT you could take and essentially use some string.. cut to length what it takes to go around them, and then measure that. FOR the belt shredding... make sure no belt guide... or brake is in the way of the next belt.

AS for the engine... the engine could be a 77, and the mower newer (engine might have stayed in storage for a while before being put on the mower) but its about close...

I have a similar machine that I found a parts manual for. The blade drive belt is Murray number 21649 and the cross drive belt is Murray number 20557. A place I have had some luck getting parts is www.outdoordistributors.com.

Belt 21649 may have been superseded by Murray part number MUR-37x12 and belt number 20557 by MUR-37x3.

    Good luck

If you go to site www3.sears.com and look up model 502255290 and continue you will get all parts lists and diagrams which apply to a craftman mower which is very close to yours.

I could not fine Manual or parts guide through any "Murray" site. I was able to download a parts guide through online parts supply company. I can't find online address but I think once such company was "Gardiner Inc. 800-848-8946".

Assuming that murray always used the same date code formats, the units date code would be feb 07,1966. As for the briggs and stratton engine, the date code would be a 1977 engine. So I would be inclined to suspect that the engine is not the original engine that came on the unit. You may find someone with the old microfiche machine that will be able to look up the parts, but as briggsdude suggested any good shop could look it up is incorrect. Most systems only look back for 10 years. You have a unit that is well beyond the 10 years. Try the trick with the string. And then use only oem belts.

I noticed a comment from MOWERMAN2468. I disagree with his comment that Murray did not manufacture for Sears. The Sears code 502 is for Murray in Ohio (before it was bought out). Please see attached PDF files and see the similarities in the mower decks.

    Hello there Betty715.
I am not sure which belt you got, But I have the part # for both belts along with the size you will need.
Part # 21649 is the Blade drive belt and the size on it is 1/2'' x 55'' (37 x 12)
The other part # is 20557 and this is the Cross drive belt and it's size is 1/2'' x 46'' (37 x 3)

    Hope this helps you out
