    Mower dies under load
Was having same issues of engine dying after 10 minutes of running under load. Thing would run all day long idling without load. It's a briggs 21hp engine on a craftmans lawn tractor. Read multiple forums about the issue... quickly cancelled thought of the coil... so solenoid it was I determined. Went to sears to order a new one... well not in stock in any warehouse... oh great, a month to get one from manufacturer... grass will be 3 feet high by then..
Parts counter guy gives me the name of a local small engine shop that keeps supplies.. so I got a used one from him for $20, sears wanted $92... so good deal and used one was guaranteed... sweet!
So I'm excited to get home and swap out the parts... done, start cutting the lawn... and yup, thing dies! Decided to bypass the solenoid. Cut pin off the original part and reinstall... well frig, thing dies again.
Back to square one... back to the forums... knowing its fuel related (I think), look at gas filter.. see gas... check for vacuum lock none, now thinking fuel pump, take it off thinking I can take it apart and clean it, nope just a fused piece of plastic... when I took the pump off, the vacuum hose that comes from the bottom of pump to the ohv cover just fell off... mmmm? So since pump is off I blew air through it thinking maybe it was semi seized or glogged etc...
Put everything back together and viola!
So not sure which fix was the right one but my grass is now cut... whoa!

    Hi,
Probably the vacuum line. The engine vacuum runs the pump. Lucky you did not damage the pump by blowing through it.
    Peace,

So my Honda civic has decided it doesn't want to run under load. I had it sitting in my driveway over Christmas for about a week then decided to take it out to my parents with my dogs. It fired up no problem, and let it warm up a bit. When I started to drive, I found that whenever I came to a...

Lawn tractor dies when under load. [ 1 Answers ]

I have a Craftsman Garden tractor that I use to help plant my garden. The engine was replaced by my Grandfather in 1991 and is a 16HP Briggs & Stratton. At the end of last season I remember once the tractor got "warmed up", especially on hot days, it would start to die when under load. I would let...
