Lawn tractor engine starts but stops running within a few seconds

I have a Sears 42 inch lawn tractor. Replaced a dead battery. Now when I turn the key to start I hear a whining noise and engine does not turn over. Any suggestions on a FIX?

My old craftsman lawn tractor cranks just fine but when I let off the clutch it sputters and dies. As long as the clutch is down its fine. As soon as it gets any resistance its just dies. Any suggestions?
