    Hydrostatic Mower Speed
I have a Murray mower with a Hydorstatic transmission that is extremely slow when going forward and at least twice as fast in reverse. I thought it may need to have the drive belt changed but that wouldn't explain why it is so much more quick in reverse than forward. If it was the drive belt wouldn't it be slow in both directions? Or could there possibly be a switch that is messed up? Thanks in advance.

Did you check to see if the Trans is full of fluid and if it has a filter has it been changed? A hydro runs on fluid flow so my guess would be low level or a restriction (plugged filter).

    Good Luck,

Are you sure it is a hydro drive? Not all automatics are fluid drive. If it is not hydro it is a speed variator and I can explain how that works once determined.

I have not checked the fluid level and I don't think it has a filter but will take a look this evening. But if it had something to do with the fluid wouldn't it effect the reverse speed as well as the forward speed? Newaukumdon - the mower has a label that says "Hydrostatic" but I don't know if that means it's a true hydor drive or not. How can I check? Thanks for all the comments.

It would be fluid drive if it does in fact say hydro.

Most likely it's the nuetral control adjustment. If it was the fluid, it wouldn't go faster in reverse then forward. Take off the panel where the brake knob and pressure relief valve are located and adjust the threaded rod that moves when you move the speed selector. Don't forget to tighten the jam nut when your done. Good luck

Skyman you were correct it was a threaded rod that neede adjusted. It didn't have a jam nut just a clip. Thanks for the suggestion.
