Hi I'm trying to remember an old animated puppet series that ran in the late 80's
It was set in space.. the main bits I can remember are
There was a space ship crewed by 3 men/pilots. There was a handsome one, and black man and a little fat one I think. Also on board was an old man and I think his daughter, they were after something... I think they were trying to find earth.. no I think they were after the mother... erm I don't know?
They were engaged in a lot of space fights with an enemy that tracked them through their travels... heres the bit that is the biggest clue
The 3 men/pilots crewed 3 smaller space ships when under attack, the 3 ships were carried by the larger ship until needed... and these 3 smaller shipped JOINED TOGETHER to make one giant fighting robot.
The handsome one crewed the head bit... the black one crewed the body and massive fists and the short one crewed the legs... help

I can only think of two puppet series that had space themes, Thunderbirds and Terrahawks. Check them out on YouTube.

UPDATE: I was hunting around and I found this. A puppet series called Dai X. Actually it's a show that I don't remember ever watching but looking at clips of it, it seems to match your description better than Thunderbirds or Terrahawks. Check out the clip I found on YouTube, here's the link.
