    What can I do...
    Hi,

I got H1-b in mid May, 2005, so I can file either as a dual-status or a resident alien. I am single. I received interest for accounts from the bank.
I tried every options with helps from this site to figure out which option saves the most.
However, I still owe more than $300 at least to IRS including state & city tax.
Is it typical for first year H1-b holders to owe this much tax to IRS?
I don't know what I calculated wrong, but it was pretty straightforward because my situation is quite simple.
Do you have any suggestion or tips for me?

Also, can I file as HoH when I supported a child who was not a resident here bbut lived with me?

    KJY:

Whether you have to pay or not depends on your withholding amount. Paying $300 is actually okay because any refund is an interest-free loan to the government.

As for HoH, you must have provided over half of the child's support, provide the child with a home for over half of the year, and be able to claim him as a dependent.
