State Taxes on Foreign Earned Income
My husband and I live and work in the Caribbean. We are US citizens and maintain a permanent home in Georgia (where we lived prior to moving to the Caribbean). Our federal tax return allows an income and expenses exemption, up to a specified amount. Apparently, Georgia doesn't allow this exemption (? ). Since we are only in Georgia 6-8 weeks per year, can we file as part-time residents? Would this benefit us? If we do that, can we continue to get a GA driver's license? Would this affect our property rights in any way? We of course pay property taxes.

    Thanks for your advice.

Sorry, but unless you formally establish residency in the Caribbean country where yo live, Georgia will continue to consider you as a full-time Georgia resident.

OK, I'm confused on your fact situation. Are you establishing residency in the Caribbean? Also, when you say you are maintaining a home in Georgia is this actually where you live or do you rent it out?

    TTE:

I made the assumption that Zuriam has moved to the Caribbean, but has maintained their U.S. and (apparently) Georgia citizenship.

On that assumption, their tax liability to both the IRS and Georgia does not change.
