    NJ taxes SDI & SUI
The company in PA my husband works for was purchased by a company in NJ. They are going to continue to have the satellite office in PA and we are residents of PA. We just received the first paycheck from this new company and I noticed that extra taxes had been taken out. A NJSDI and a NJSUI plus another one. I'm confused as to why they deducted these amounts from our pay since we are PA residents. Shouldn't we only pay the PA SUI amount and not NJ amounts??

    JazzieLady:

You are correct! If you do not live or work at any time during the tax year in New Jersey, you are not liable for any NJ taxes.

More than likely, the new company's payroll department just added your husband's name to their payroll without making any adjustments as to where you live. Have your husband contact his payroll department and explain the facts of life to them. Assuming they are reasonably competent at their job, they will figure it out, refund the NJ taxes withheld and begin withholding the appropriate Pennsylvania taxes.

    NJ Taxes SUI & SDI
I've recently started a job for a company with locations in FL, GA & NJ, but I live in PA and my work is in PA at one of their clients. Once in a while I will go to the office in NJ, but less than once a month.

They are withholding taxes for NJ SUI & SDI. Is this correct for them to do? Also, they are NOT withholding anything for PA SUI or SDI.

Will I be able to collect unemployment, if need be, and from which state?

    Thanks!

    Stan:

Based on what you stated, you should be paying state income taxes only to PA. No NJ taxes should be withheld. Again, point this out to your payroll department and they should makethe necessary adjsutments.

The unemployment compensation should come from PA.

I wish I had seen this question a long time ago. Remember that some states (PA) do not have short term disability ins. so let your employer deduct the money and because you live in a state that does have state disability ins. (NJ) you can go out for things like an injury not during work and have $$$$$ coming in. You can also deduct in money withheld on you Fed and State Income Taxes. It's call double taxation and comes back to you $ for $. My PA. employer stopped taking out the money which actually upset me and I continue to try to get them to deduct it again. So think it all out carefully.

Agreed. There is much more to withholdings than just the short-term tax issues.

I work in NJ and live in PA my NJ withholdings are NJ SDI, NJ SUI, NJ EE workforce development and NJ Employee FLI. I understand NJSDI is beneficial since PA does not offer, but the others I am not sure of. Can you tell me if the other are necessary? Thanks, Deborah

SUI is State Unemployment Insurance, which may not apply to you.

Not sure what NJ EE is.

NJ Employee FLI is Family Leave Insurance; again may NOT apply you you.
