Live in NYC work in NJ
    Hi,
I live in NYC and work in NJ.
My gross wages were only 8400$ and I am married.
    I paid taxes to NJ.
I need to know who do I have to file to , meaning 1.Federal 2.NJ and 3.NY ?
And if so because I earned so little I understand I will receive most if not all of the taxes I paid back.
But because I paid NJ taxes but live in NYC how does that work?

    Thanks for your help

Your situation is a bit unusual, because usually the taxpayer works in NYC and lives in NJ.

However, you should file tax returns for the federal and both states because, on the federal return you are probably eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and, for both states, you will probably get all your withheld state income taxes back and then some. However, filing the state return may not be necessary if you had a small amount of taxs withheld.

You can file the returns with any number of on-line tax services.

If you are not familiar with how taxes work, or are uncomfortable doing taxes on-line, it might be best that you get professional help, though it might set you back $150 or more to have a federal return and two state returns done.

I could do it as well. I will not discuss my fee on this public forum, but it would be less than $150. You would have to fax me your W-2 and some other information. I can also provide you with references from three clients from NYC and NJ.

    Thanks for your reply,
So its possible I will receive money back from both states?
Or will I get back from New Jersey and owe New York something?

    Thanks

Given your income level and marital status, I would be real surprised if you did not get back everything that was withheld, plus get some type of low income credit from both states.
