Live in New York work in New Jersey
Hi I live in New York and work in New Jersey every year I loose a lot of money because my employer does not withhold ny taxes in my checks. Is there anything that can be done without hurting them?
So they can start to withhold every check ny taxes also, because they take nj but do not withhold ny tax, so at the end of the year Im getting penalized for paying late the whole amount!
    Thanks I appreciate the help.
    Sergio.
Ps Can they withhold ny tax also?
    Thanks.:(

No, but you can file quarterly estimated taxes, just take some of the money from your check, put it in the bank, then you file estimated taxes.
Same thing people with a lot of money in the bank or other income do.

Also I am not a expert on work in one state but live in another, but you should not be paying double tax, one works as a credit toward the other, I forget how they described it, But check with a good tax accountant,

Paying the quarterly estimated tax is perhaps the easiest way to handle it, but your employer should also be willing to withhold NY taxes. It's just not that hard to do.

I used to live in New York and work in New Jersey. My employer was always charging me both New Jersey state, New York state, and New York City taxes. It was no problem. That is what they're supposed to do.
You need to push your employer to charge you both taxes.
