International intern working in the US
    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me in telling me what forms I have to fill in for my taxes. I am an intern who works in the USA full-time on a J1 visa and so I would like to know the forms I have to fill in and if I am exempt from any taxes I have already paid? I arrived in June 2008 and I will be leaving at the end of June this year.

    Any advice would be gratefull.

On J1 you are exempt from residency for 2-years. You must file non-resident tax return and Form 8843. Your income is not subject to FICA taxes but you must pay federal and state income taxes.

You can probably also deduct your daily living expenses because your internship meets the criteria of being a temporary job assignment.

Depending on where you are working, these deductions could have the effect of completely offsetting your federal and state income tax liability.
