H1-B Social Security and Medicare Taxes
    Hello,
I have been working with a company in South Carolina since Nov, 2006 and started on a student work permit visa (F1-OPT). I then had my visa transferred to a H1-B starting on Oct 1, 2007. But my employer was not aware that social security and medicare taxes were to be deducted from my pay. What are the procedures to pay the IRS the taxes I owe since Oct 2007 ? My employer has started deducting the right amount of taxes since Feb 2008. Please do let me know what needs to be done for the period between Oct, 2007 and Feb, 2008.

    Thank You,

    BChan

You can't do anything about paying the past FICA taxes. It is your employer who is responsible. Your responsibility was that you informed the employer of change of status.

For 2008, tell the employer to deduct past FICA taxes for wages paid from Jan 2008 to Feb 2008.
