Filing for two states: worked in NY lived in NJ and NY
I moved from NJ to NY in 4/2009 and worked in NY during whole year of 2009. In my W-2 form there appears two rows for line 16 one, upper, for NY and the other for NJ with slightly different amounts. There is only one figure, in the upper row, for state income tax (line 17). I underatnd that I need to file for two states.

    1) What forms should I file? (NJ-resident and NY part-time resident ?)
    2) Is the income tax withheld by NY or NJ? How would I know? Or do I use the same amount in filing for either state?
    3) When I filled the forms (NJ-resident and NY part-time resident), it seems that I should get 833 from NJ and owe 533 to NY. Do these figures make sense? State income tax is 1440 in line 17 of W2.
    4) It seems really complicated, what if I do not file at all or file for one state only

    I really appreciate your help

NY part year resident, NJ part year resident.
Report all income year on NY return.
On NJ return report income earned while you lived in NJ. This income you have also reported on NY return. On NJ return, claim credit for taxes paid to NY for this income. Your U.S. Tax Return: Working or Living in Two or More states
