Do I need a SSN rejection letter to file for ITIN for my H4 wife
    Hi experts,
I am on H1 and filing for taxes first time for year 2008. I got married in Sep, 2008 and brought my wife to USA. So now I am filling the taxes jointly with my wife.
But my wife is currently not in USA. So my question is
    - Do I need to get an SSN rejection letter to file for her ITIN?
If Yes, then how do I get that as she is not in USA right now and SSA office doesn't accept notarized copies of passport?

    Thanks in advance,

    Regards,
    FlyingColors.

No SSN rejection letter is required.

You submit the notarized photocopy of her passport to the IRS ITIN Center in Austin, Texas, along with your annual tax return.

However, the IRS will NOT accept notarizations from most Third world countries, such as India or Pakistan. For this reason, your wife will need to get the passport certified as a true copy by the U.S. embassy or consulate office in her country.

Thanks for your prompt answer. My wife is in Canada. Can she get her passport copy notarized from there(from any bank etc.. ). Do those notary guys have to attach any special notary document with the passport copy?

    Thanks,

A Canadian notary is just fie. The IRS only has problems for notaries in country in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
