    Dependent non-resident alien
My parents lived with me for 2011 with no income. For my Income Tax 2011, can I declare them as dependents even if they do not have Social Security number?

You may claim them as dependents if their income for the year is less than $3,650 and you provided at least half their support. They must also be US citizens, US resident aliens, US nationals, or residents of the Canada or Mexico. Since they don't have SS numbers I assume that they are resident aliens - if they do not qualify for SS numbers they must each apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) so they you can claim them as dependents.

I ve decided to try to do my 1040NR taxes alone for the first time. The last accountants I had said that I could not declare my children as dependent. I am a non-resident, but "married resident of Canada) for filing status of 1040 NR. I have one child left at home who is an american citizen. I am a G-4.
Can I and why would I not declare my child as a dependent? I am trying to find that info and can not find it.

    Veromaier:

My understanding of current tax law is that G-4 visa holders are TOTALLY EXEMPT from U.S. income taxes. If you are G-4, WHY are you filing a Form 1040NR?
