California taxes on foreign rental property
    Hi,

I'm renting my house in France. I'm a resident of California.
I already filed my federal tax return in which I declared the income of this rental.

But do I have to declare it in the state tax return ?
I mean, I didn't claim any depreciation or amortization of the house, just the mortgage and the income so do I have to file form 3885A and 540ca line 17 ?

Thanks for your help, this part is very complicated !

As a resident of CA you must report all world-wide income to CA. I think it would make sense to claim depreciation on this income property so as to reduce the income amount and save on your CA taxes.

    Tanks for your answer.
So if I unerstand well it make sense to do it but it's not an obligation ?

I think this part of the taxes are too complicated for me so I prefer not to claim that (this is the last time I do the returns by paper, next year my wife will have an ITIN).
But if you have an easy way to calcul the claim..

    Thanks

No - you are not obligated to claim depreciaition.

I've been using Turboax for years, so for me claiming these sorts of deductions is not too onerous. I think the expense is worth the expertise it provides and the assurance that the math all works properly.
