How bad can judgements hurt you?
    Hi,
My boyfriend has a judgement against him. It has been 10 years. The party who has the judgement has renewed it. What happens if he never pays it? What can be done to him? He will eventually own his property. Can it be taken? Can he leave his property to his children without this being collected? How long can these people continue to renew it? We live in North Carolina.

If it was renewed within the prescribed time prior to the 10 year limit, then the judgment will be good for another 10 years. After the second 10 years has gone by, then it cannot be renewed again.

I'm surprised the judgement holder hasn't tried to collect. Maybe they forgot about it were just reminded that they needed to renew so now may come after him.

If he owns property other than a primary residence, they could file a lien on it, preventing it from being transferred until the lien is statisfied.

The fact that the judgement exists will also show on his credit report.

    Why doesn't he pay it?

They can get a lien against the property, once they get the lien, it will have to be paid by the estate or before it can be sold.

It will hurt his getting any type of real estate loan, and seriously hurt his credit report
