    YES, Anything is possible !
Probable is a completely different question.

Basically if your computer is connected to the internet then there is a chance, no matter how slim, that "bad people" can access any and all data on it.

As an aside, thousands upon thousands of people have their printers, webcams and other peripherals shared on the internet and don't realise, it's fairly easy to find them through Google search (If you know what to search for). You can easily get full access to the device. This is not even hacking.

If someone wants to hack you, then that's it, game over.
You will get NO warnings or alerts.

It's possible for someone to switch on your webcam by hacking into your computer over the internet, but it's unlikely to happen so long as you have a firewall program.

Webcam Trojan perv gets slapped wrist | The Register

    Sophos website search

There are cases of people being spied on with their own webcams, but it's rare and a voyeur is unlikely to see very much unless the camera is high quality and repositionable.

ANYTHING on your computer could - in theory - be accessed by a determined hacker, but you're probably at more risk of a burglar coming into your home and simply stealing your PC.

Take simple security precautions: Use a reputable Firewall, anti-virus, and anti spyware program (I also have an anti rootkit program); they can all be downloaded for free.

It's also possible that while you are on webcam, the streamed video could be captured and
Passed on to someone else. An even more low-tech method would be to point a video camera at the screen and simply record it.

Don't get paranoid, but do use your common sense and err on the side of caution.
