I can't seem to find it in my Urge subscription but I now would like to know to because those words are so strong and I am wondering what the whole song is really about. Thanks a lot, I might be looking forever. If I find it I will let you know!

In regards to the song, "Judy May" from the 70's...

    I too recall it...

I wasn't even a teenager at the time, but I clearly remember the tune.
It had kind of a slow burn, for a short while like only a couple of months it was in power rotation on the Top 40 radio stations.

The hook which you mention from the refrane was just a monster.

Judy May... She sure had a way...
Her eyes would sparkle and shine every time papa got ready to leave...

I actually recorded it once on a portable reel to reel... (long since gone)
Later became a DJ and have never forgotten the track.

I too have never been able to track it down.

I remember at the time thinking that the record company must have pulled the track because of the controversial nature of the lyrics... even coming out of the 60's

I never found out if it was that or a copyright issue, but my instinct has always led me to believe it was the message in the tune that made it disappear from the radio.

At the time I was living just ouside of DC and WPGC was a Top 40 station.

Funnny I was just flipping though Napster and I remembered it... no dice, then I found your question after a Google search.

    Someone has to know.

It was one of those songs like "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman. Not real complicated.
Simple direct lyrics and a catchy tune...

Should have been a monster hit... I think controversy killed it.

Will keep looking... eventually I'll dig it up.
Will post again when I do.

Found it by typing in part of the lyrics I could recall. Oddly that song hit me out of the blue today on my drive home from work. Wife thinks I'm a tad off today. Alas, the artist is Boomer Castleman and the lyrics follow:

As an only child of seventeen
It hurt when my momma died
When my daddy got home just a few days later
Well, he broke right down and cried
But after a year, he up and wed
A girl that was half his age
Then the family was my daddy and me and Judy Mae
Well, my daddy did a lot of traveling around
And before he would say good-bye
Hed tell me to take care of my new momma
She's the apple of his eye
And as he kissed his brand new wife good-bye
I always used to hear him say,
    Look after my boy
Won't you please, now, Judy Mae?

    CHORUS

Judy Mae, oh, she sure had a way
    Of looking after me
Yeah, her eyes would sparkle and shine
Every time Papa got ready to leave

Well, one night while my daddy was gone
    She tiptoed into my room
She said that she had to talk to me
Cause my dad was going to be home soon
She said, You know I get so lonely and cold
When your daddy is gone for days.
What a boy like could do to Judy Mae.
Well, I told her that Id never done this before
And then she took my hand
And showed me all of the secret things
That turned a boy into a man
And as I lay there by her side
I heard a noise at the window pane
I think that's just the wind, said Judy Mae
    CHORUS

Well, the next day Daddy had an accident
And two days later he died
The sheriff said Daddy could drive too good
To even try to take a turn that wide
But thinking back now, I begin to wonder
    To this very day
If it was him, not the wind
That saw me with Judy Mae
If it was him, not the wind
That saw me with Judy Mae
