My hard disk is of 40GB. When I bought my computer then I had 4 partitions of size 9.75 GB each i.e. total 39 GB. Than I installed linux. Then I again re-installed windows. Now linux didn't boot.
I went to disk management. There were two unknown partition. I think maybe they were of linux and swap. I deleted the one with bigger size and created a new partition. I left the one with smaller size. When I again started my computer I can find that partition anywhere. Now I have partitions with 3 having size 9.75 gb and 1 having 7.75 gb. Now my total space is only 37GB. Can I recover that lost space. I don't want data in that, only the space.

What were your partition sizes when you installed Linux and created a swap?

What to say!I am very stupid. The problem is that I didn't installed linux myself. It is thing of two years ago. That time I was new in computer field. It was one month after I bought my computer. So I took my computer to the shop from where I purchased it and they installed linux.
I can provide some more data which may be useful for you:-
I have installed knoppix(it didn't have to do anything with my problem) fro cd. And so in boot menu there are two options of starting knoppix. I am not so expert but think that when we install linux(knoppix is short version), in boot menu a option for it's swap file also comes. I remember that when I started the computer that time there were three options for linux.
Can it help.
I am not sure but think that 2gb is lost so the swap area might be 2gb. But in disk management in windows(before I deleted the larger sized partition) there was one another partition of size 256mb. So it also maybe that. I'm totally confused.

Is the larger partition and the smaller partition next to each other when viewed in Disk Management?

If so, delete the smaller partition too. Now you can combine the larger partition already deleted with the smaller partition and format as 1 partition.

Now you should have two 9.75 GB partitions and 1 19.5 GB partition.

You might also want to look into a freeware partitioning tool, or purchase one, such Norton Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director. This will let you delete and create partitions and resize without for the most part, worrying about losing data.

Oh thanks for your answer. But the problem is that I deleted the larger partition and left the one with smaller size. I wanted to do it later. But when I started my computer next time I cannot find that smaller partition in disk management.
