    Maple tree roots
    I have a maple tree with roots growing into the foundation of my house. These roots are all above ground. Can I cut them without killing the tree?:confused:

    I think you can cut them. I believe these to be suckers that start on a young tree and root. They are nothing to do with the 'tap' roots of the tree, which are the ones that seek nourishment.

    Previous owner must have planted too near the house, which is a common mistake. My main Maple tree is 20 ft from the house and is about 50 years old, and not a problem,nor will it ever be.

    Willow trees are the ones that are a problem and their roots seek moisture towards the foundation of a house.

    I would call your local landscape company because cutting them off may make a real mess for your lawn.

    Actually, this tree is about 50 years old too and 15 feet or so from my house. The area where the large roots are will not grow grass. I don't think it will hurt the tree either so I thank you very much for your help.
