Ben Carson equates slaves with immigrants .
"And perhaps, like some of you, these new arrivals might have had some moments of doubt, wondering if they had made a mistake in leaving everything and everyone they ever knew behind...So life in America was not always easy. It wasn't always easy for new immigrants. Certainly it wasn't easy for those of African heritage who had not come here voluntarily, and yet in their own way were immigrants themselves.
There was discrimination and hardship and poverty. But, like you, they no doubt found inspiration in all those who had come before them. And they were able to muster faith that, here in America, they might build a better life and give their children something more."
What an outrageous thing to say !

In response, the Internet came alive this morning with comments including that Frederick Douglass made it big after his plantation internship, and Harriet Tubman turned out to be a terrific tour guide! And "George Washington Carver. With the peanuts? Love peanut butter. When it's inside those pretzel nibs? Nice."
And then there was a suggestion that Dr. Ben Carson do something about President Trump's brain....

Hadn't thought of that, but sounds like a win/win situation. I think Dr. Carson is as his reputation says... a brilliant surgeon, but as an inspiring orator... what a maroon.
PS, I ain't perfect either! 8o

That's NOT what it means.
A malapropism and favorite expression of Bugs Bunny, after outwitting Elmer Fudd. Usually uttered by Bugs this while walking away and wiping his hands in satisfaction. The joke of course is that Bugs mispronounces " moron."
Bugs: "What a maroon."

And illegal aliens who have no legal status are not immigrants, they are criminals. But everyone wants to call them immigrants.
The same failed logic as the slave issue

It seems that there is a great deal of failed logic associated with many issues
Islam is not a religion of peace
Illegal aliens are not immigrants
Innoculations are not harmful
Just to name a few

Ok here is the REAL Ben Carson Quote :
And go to Ellis Island one of these days if you haven’t been there and go through that museum on Ellis Island. And look at the pictures of all those people who are hanging up there. From every part of the world, many of them carrying all their earthly belongings in their two hands, not knowing what this country held for them. Look at the determination in their eyes. That’s what America is about. A land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they, too, had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.
The quote in the OP was by the emperor on December 15, 2015
