    Maple trees do not have a tap root but a lateral root. All depends where it was planted and where the water supply is.

    If you look at Maple trees planted for a long time you will see all the roots along the top of the ground (laterals as noted above), impossible to grow grass under them.

We are removing a maple tree due to ice storm damage. We have encountered many roots large and small while digging around the remaining stump. I am wondering, will we encounter a taproot or will we only encounter the seemingly endless number of "horizontal" roots?
