    Well, lets say you have magnesium ions, iron ions, and sulphate ions floating around.

    Magnesium is more reactive than iron, so which one is going to react with the sulphate?

    So what are the products?

    Huzzah!

    Well done! That wasn't too hard was it?

    You see the magnesium replaces the iron in the sulphate compound, because magnesium is more reactive than iron (see the reactivity series).
