    Pregnancy and computed tomography
My name is Maryna. I live in Ukraine.
I am 28, in 2004 I did laparoscopy because of my cyst on my ovary, and it was successful but my surgeon said that I should never do abortion in my life, that what I did. My first pregnancy happened 6 weeks ago but I found out about it one week ago. What happened - on third week of pregnancy I got inflammation of the kidneys and our doctors did computed tomography оf abdominal cavity, kidneys and bladder. They used for tomography iodine-containing contrast agent "tomogeksol".
When I went to gynecologist - she said that I shoud do abortion by pills because of that tomography anyway I will have very sick baby. Me and my husband were stressed out with this fact because we really want to have baby. So we decided to leave my pregnancy and just to pray for her or his health. I still very stressed about that risk. Please, please, help us with your advice.

    Sincerely, Maryna

This appears to be a drug not commonly used in the US. Almost all research I tried were in foreign languages.

I would consult a second doctor about the pregnancy, to see what they feel. In the end it will be your choice,

Having a doctor, your doctor, tell you if you continue with your pregnancy, you will have an unhealthy child is a lot to get think about. You may want a child badly, but aren't you being selfish wanting to go ahead with the pregnancy knowing that your child may have years of suffering. I can't think of how it would be for me to try caring for a baby that needs special care, never knowing if you are doing the right thing.

I would suggest a second opinion, as you owe it to your unborn child and you and your husband. I agree with Chuck on this.

No one here can give you medical advise or make a decision for you.

Was this performed your third week counting from the first day of your last period? Or third week from likely conception? How was the being 6 weeks pregnant determined? The difference in timing can make a difference in potential risk.

Definitely get a second opinion. I would seek out a radiologist and an obstetrician. Find out more about the amount of exposure that you received.

Here are two sites that give a bit of information in regard to possible effects: Teratogenesis After Exposure to Ionizing Radiation | UCSF Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging
