My 1998 Jeep makes a noise that sounds like power steering pump.
Jeep sounds like steering pump... but this sound is coming from Transmission. When I start up to drive the sound is present, and changes sound at 35 mph shift... at 42mph shift the noise goes away! 168000 miles. I don't think it is a bearing, but I would like to know if this is repairable with transmission still attached to vehicle (ie fix it through drain pan). Thanks in advance! Week

About the only thing accessible through the pan is the valve body and some shift linkage and modulator parts. Sounds like a pump. Hope for the best.

I would try dropping and cleaning the pan and magnet, replacing both internal filters, and refilling with Valvoline ATF+4. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'd take the Jeep to the dealer for diagnosis and repair.

I know ATF4+ sounds like the fluid... but if you check - it should be Dextron for this year and model...

My references show ATF+4 for virtually all 1998 Jeeps, which is easy enough to confirm with your local Jeep dealer.
