How long will I have the brown discharge before my period actually starts? By the way I've never had my period yet and I'm 14 and my mom started hers at 13...

That is hard to say. It is something you should talk to your mother about. She's a wealth of information in this area.

The brown discharge is usually the first sign that your period has started. Not all girls get bright red bleeding right away. Also, it can take years for your period to regulate, so you might get it for a week one month, then skip a few months, then just get spotting, then get it for 4 days, then get it twice in a month etc. etc. Off periods are normal when you're young.

How long has the brown discharge been going on for?

I would say yes, but realize that I can only guess online. My bet is that it will turn red soon. Brown discharge is usually old blood, blood that's been in your body for a while. It's your body's way of cleaning itself out. Many girls get brown discharge for their first period. Many women will get brown discharge near the end of their period, I always do. But each woman is different.

Realize that even if this is your first period, it may be months before you get another, or you could get another next week, or suddenly have it turn very heavy and very red. The joys of being young, you never know what to expect, or when to expect it. Your body is going through a lot of changes, it will take a while for things to even out. It sucks royally. We've all been there.

Always have pads on hand. When I was younger I would wear a panty liner (thin enough that it doesn't really bother you, but a bit of protection just in case) and I'd carry thicker pads in my purse. With a panty liner you're always protected, since you'll likely not have regular periods for a while yet.

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with being 14 with no period. I was 14 when I started, my mom was 16, her mom was 9. You really can't base it on your mom and when she started. We're all different.

If you have any questions I'm happy to answer.

That can happen. It's usually off and on in the beginning. But it could be that this discharge is something else. Like I said before, I can't tell you for sure if this is your period.

Not all women have cramps. As I said before, I can't tell you if it's your period. It's simply not something that anyone online can tell you for sure. We can only guess.
