K-r394 is the Devonshire model Kohler faucet...

Handles should be part of the cone-like trim. Unscrew the cone-like trip piece. It should be hand-tied only. Once removed, you will gain access to the cartridge ( aka stem ). Remove cartridge with small channel locks in upward motion. Since this model utilized ceramic discs, you will have to buy entire cartridge. Take it to Home Depot and buy replacement cartridge. Install same way as you removed the old one.

Or you can call Kohler and there is a chance they will send you new cartridge for free. Here is Kohler's contact info: Call 1-800-4KOHLER (1-800-456-4537)

    Hope that helps.

Milo-Thanks for your response to my problem-I am unable to remove the cone-like base by hand (maybe threads are corroded) I will get a strap wrench and try again. Will the handle become detached (move up) from the cartridge shaft as I unscrew he base?
