    Child abandonment & Name Change
Hi, My Name is Rachel. I'm from Louisiana. My son is 3 turning 4 in a couple of weeks. I have been wanting to change his name since he was born because his dad forced his way on his birth certif. Since then I have not seen or heard from him. He has not been in my sons life or given any child support. I've also been told that he was recently deported. I want to change his last name to mine and also change his middle name to his first name. How would I go about doing this?

You would have to go to court to petition for a change in your child's legal name. The court will require that you make a good faith effort to contact the father so you should try to confirm he was deported.

I would engage a lawyer to help you do this as the lawyer will know how to satisfy the court that you did try to find him.
