Does anyone know what the black and white wire is for? I'm not using a switch with the fan/light. I'm just going to control it with the chains. It says to hook.it to the black and white wire coming from the ceiling but I don't have one of those coming from the ceiling. Please help me out so my wife will get off my . Thanks! Green.

That means one black wire and one white wire, just in case you thought it meant one wire that was black and white.

If you are in the USA you will have at least one black wire and one white wire in the ceiling box.

The ceiling fan will have at least one black wire and one white wire. If it has a light kit you will have either a blue wire or a black with white strip wire.

Connect the black wire from the fan to the black wire from the ceiling. If you have a blue wire or black with white strip wire also connect that wire to the black wire from the ceiling.

Connect the white wire from the fan to the white wire from the ceiling.

Whether the black wire from the ceiling goes through the switch depends on how thing are wired. If there is only one black wire it will.

Where do you live and what colors are coming out of the ceiling box? Was this box hold a fan before of just a light?
