I've never spent over $500 for a good computer, by buying them slightly used on eBay.
Mostly DELL notebooks every 4 or 5 years, and selling the old ones, or giving them to relatives. I can't stand the touch pad mouse though, so always have a USB mouse.

Dell makes some nice ones, I do prefer theirs, I currently have a compaq. But there should be no trouble finding one at that price range

Depending on screen size you should find several models with those specs in your budget. However, unless you order one directly, it will comes with Windows.

Not many other then gaminig ones have a back lit keyboard. The only maker Im aware of (brand) is alienware. They are under the Dell umbrella. If you are in the U.S. then there is a lot to choose from. I agree with Scott as far as off the shelf (on sale) vs ordering one. Also depending on what your using it for since you have a decent budget for one you might think about considering one with a SSD. (Solid State Drive). Just be sure to back up to an external frequently.

Here are 2 places you can shop at that I have used for many years.

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, and More!

TigerDirect.com - Electronics, Tablets, Phones, Office Supplies & Video Games
