Suppose your police department is planning to purchase 70 new laptops for its patrol cars.
    1. Research and find a particular selling price for any style of laptop.
    2. Suppose that the laptops are marked down 3% off the total selling price. Calculate how much the department will save with the 3% savings.
    3. Why might the laptop provider give the police department a markdown on the purchase of those laptops? Explain clearly.

I found a laptop on sale for $599.00 rounded off to $600. The regular price was $749 rounded off to $800. Which makes a $200 off the regular price.

for 70 laptops at $600= $42,000 (based on the sell price)
if I take $600 and divide it by 0.03 and come up with 20,000 and then subtract 42,000 from 20,000 and come up with $22,000 is this the price the department paid?

First of all, $749 does not round to $800.

    now I would take $600 x 70 laptops =42,000
if I take $600 and divide it 0.03=20,000
42,000 - 20,000= 22,000 that is saved by the dept. correct?

If you look at 42,000 and 20,000, does that look like 3%? You need to multiply, not divide.

    okay I would multiply $600 by 0.03 which = 18,000
then take 42,000-18,000= $24,000 saved by the department?

You aren't placing your decimals correctly. $600x.03=$18.00

But then I also took 42,000 and multiplied it by 3% and my answer is $1,260.
    I am lost now.

You'd save $18 per computer or $1260 for all of them, so that is correct!

    okay so lets say laptops at $600.00 x 70 = 42,000
    $600.00 x 0.03= $18.00
    $42,000- $18.00= $41,982
so all they saved was $18.00 ?

No! $42,000 - $1260 because that's for all of them. $18 is for one only.

okay so then the answer is 42,000 - 1,260= 40,740 being what they paid by saving the $1,260. Correct?
