    Most Maple Chase thermostats had a space for two batteries but only need one to operate. These were early digital thermostats which had a volatile memory. This means they would "go stupid" & loose the program if the batteries were removed. It operates on one, but before removing the old battery you put a new one in the other space thus never completely losing power.
