Sump pit in basement receives washer water and really stinks!

Our washer is in the basement and drains to an open sump pit (submersible pump), which, after it fills to a certain level, will turn on pump out the gray water. The pit has been really stinking the last year or so. We flush it out occasionally which helps for a while, but the smell always comes...

My sump pump is only 3 years old and it won't stop running after it has pumped the water out of the sump pit. What do I do to fix this? Is there a switch that I have to adjust? Please help.
