    Is it necessary/beneficial for non-profit organizations to depreciate equipment purchases.

    A non profit as any other group has to do proper accounting, keep the money separate from profit and/or non profit money and do all methods of proper accounting.

    You would be doing a injustice and improper book keeping not to follow all proper accounting methods
