Well, it is an infection, which means you were exposed to it through someone who was infected.

But there is prevention. Frequent and good handwashing techniques will help along with a good balanced diet and a daily vitamin will help get you through the cold and flu season.

What J_9 said is all true. There are precautions you can take to keep yourself well. Here is a factsheet from NIAD (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases):

    Sinusitis, NIAID Fact Sheet

I used to have chronic sinusitis. Was sent to a specialist and found out I had a deviated septum (from an old toboggan accident).. Had surgery to straighten my nose and corrected the septum and I honestly have had nothing more than minor problems since.

Be very careful - sinusitis can be result of serious medical problems, including growths in sinus cavities. If yours doesn't clear up in reasonable length of time, find ear, nose & throat specialist and ask him to test maxilary sinus cavity; if it's positive, take details of his treatment plan/surgical procedure to another ENT dr for second opinion, make sure to ask both doctors re all possible dangers. Then write to me to discuss (I have had 5 such surgeries.)

    Hi,

    I don't think I have major sinusitis,

What happens to me is I get nasal congestion , and my nose turns dry I don't get sneezing and sometimes I feel I am not able to breathe also, but I don't get any headaches , I sometimes get head aces not severer ones. I need to use some nasal congestions spry to get relieved. I used to takes hot water fumes. what really happens sometime when my nose is blocked and if I try to take saline water throgh nose my head starts paining , shooting pain. I have shown to doctor also they mostly give me antibiotics and some anti allergies.

This my condition at present and I don't know which type of sinus it is.

    Hope you can guide me.

    Regards

Sorry, but as someone who has had 5 sinus surgeries, you cannot avoid sinusitis, but you may be able to reduce severity by avoiding usual irritants, avoiding dry heat and so forth. Also, most nose drops and sprays dry the mucous membranes, use Ayr, a simple saline solution that you can use any number of times. And if your regular dr does not help, see an ear, nose and throat specialist; if that dr does not help, see another. Just remember, there is nothing closer to your brain than your sinuses, this is not a minor condition.

I have suffered for years from cronic sinus infections and bronchitis. I got a pneumonia shot a few years ago (that has stopped the bronchitis!! ) and as soon as I show any signs of getting a cold, I start sinus irregation with a netty pot. It looks like a genie's lamp (you can get it at a health food store). You put a mild salt and warm water solution in it and pour it into one nostril while tilting your head over the sink sideways. It goes up into your sinus cavities and comes out the other nostril. You would not believe the "stuff" that comes out. I do this morning and evening. If necessary, I use Afrin "MOISTURIZING" nasal spray at night - only for 3 or 4 days because you can become addicted to it - and your stuffiness will get worse! Be sure to get the moisturizing kind, and use a warm steam vaporizer at night. I have not had a sinus infection in a very long time (and I used to get them 2 or 3 times each year.) I have also learned that mild sinus infections can go away without antibiotics. Don't get into the habit (like I did) of going to get antibiotics right away. It is very bad to take so many, I was taking them 3 time a year, sometimes 4. I also try to eat foods to build up my immune system. Raw garlic is a natural antibiotic. I cut one clove into 3 or 4 pieces and take like pills each day. I make bean soup out of soy beans, black beans and mung beans, onions, shiitake mushrooms, a little ginger and sugar, lots of garlic and try to eat it every day. I also drink lots of green and white tea. I take antioxident vitamins and lots of vitamin C. Good luck, I know how you are suffering and it's really hard to find help!!
