Converting shower rough in to toilet rough in
I am in the midst of finishing my basement and have stumbled upon a roadblock. The builder has installed the rough ins in awkward areas. I would like to close off the toilet rough-in and convert the shower rough in to a toilet rough in. Is this possible?

The size of the shower waste would have to be increased all the way to the stack. Or u way be able to tie into existing toilet line. Without drawing to see set up can not tell.

The toilet rough is 3 or 4" and the shower is probably 2". If you can replace the shower drain line with a 3 or 4", maybe. You will also need to determine if the venting is adequate. Hope this isn't in a slab! You could also consider a macerating toilet but the cost and pumping is expensive.

What do you mean by slab? Right now the shower rough in seems to be boxed in - need to take off the plywood to check, whereas the toilet rough in is 7-8 inches off the concrete

Yes that's quite typical since they don't know how you will finish the floor. The shower has a deep hole since you will put a trap in the hole, the toilet has in internal trap and fits on the floor flange. What I was referring to by slab was asking if the floor was concrete but then realized it was a basement. You will have to cut out all the concrete to the main stack or main drain to install a toilet. You can't expect a 3 inch toilet to successfully push stuff through a 2" or possibly 1.5" pipe unless you use a macerating toilet and those usually flush up. If the toilet it too far back against the wall or corner, you can set the toilet on an angle in the corner. Code requires 15" from center of toilet to a wall. If you turn on an angle, you can use a 10" rough in for more clearance.

Agree with the above advice. As ma0651 is trying to explain, you won't be able to put Toilet on Shower plumbing and Shower onto Toilet pipe without cutting into the concrete and redoing rough-in drains. Reason: Size of toilet pipe is fine for shower but has no trap. Shower drain is too small for toilet. Furthermore, if wet vented than you will have to deal with redoing vent(s) as well. Milo
