Is there a way to speed up a windows program or process?
I'm running XP Pro and occasionally copy files from one PC to another via my wireless network. While not running any other programs, during the copy the cpu shows more than 90% idle time and the wireless card is running at only 25%.

Sounds perfectly normal, especially if the copy is of multiple files.
A single, large block of data copies at a higher overall utilisation.

    Hi Curlyben,

It may be normal, but I'm asking is there a way to make it go faster?

Same thing with running a virus scan of the hard disk or defragging a disk. It just seems
Like there should be a way to get that cpu fella busier and make the process go faster!

No there isn't anyway realistic way to make these functions operate faster.
When there are many files of differing sizes the process needs to continually start and stop, it isn't one smooth transition. So the CPU and network usage has peaks and troughs..
    That's the way windoze functions..

This is the case even when copying a single large video file.
How about running in safe mode?
Or fine which processes are pertinent and raising their priority?

    In order of posting.
Single large files tend to utilise a steady amount of resources, but not 100% of anything available.
Safe mode won't help, neither will messing with the priorities.

Well, shucks. I like to always believe there is some trick or work-around
That can be found if one tries hard enough!

    Thanks for all the info!!
