2002 Ford Escape V6 with 115,000 miles. It jumps or lopes at low speed only.

    . Check for codes.

. Install new spark plugs (Motorcraft only), if they have not been replaced in 50,000 miles.

It could also be a failing DPFE Sensor, which will affect the transmission. It usually will throw a code, however. Try changing the transmission fluid and filter (not possible on some Escapes), if it has not been done in 25,000 miles.

ATXs are the weak link in all FWD vehicles. Ford recommends doing it every 30,000 miles.

Can you change the filter on your Escape? If not, that may be the source of your problem. Ideally, you want to be able to drop and clean the pan, clean the magnet, replace the filter, and refill with Mercon V.

If you don't drop and clean the pan, plus replace the filter, T-Tech machines can stir up all of the crud in the pan, clog the filter, and cause catastrophic ATX failure.

On my 2000 Taurus, with the Duratec engine, I only use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in the transmission and power steering system. It makes a big difference in consistent 105 degree weather in city traffic.

No. Stay away from all additives like that. Mercon V is a complete chemical package by itself. In fact, additives like that can cause shudder problems. Ford recommends against using engine oil and transmission additives.
