My sink is clogged and will not drain. I have tried plunging it and I've actually detached the pipes up to the U shaped piece and there is nothing clogged in there. So I'm thinking that there is a clog further back, is the next step to call a plumber and have them snake it?

Oddly enough, try pouring a full bottle of hydrogen peroxide and bleach in at the same time, don't mix then pour, keep them separated. Hope this helps! I have don't this in my house and have recommended it to many people... Cheaper than a plumber!

Kitchen or bathroom sink? If bathroom sink did you block the overflow while plunging? If kitchen double sink did you block one side while plunging the other?

Kitchen, the overflow if fine and yes I blocked one side while plunging the other. One side is a disposal so I don't know if that makes any difference.

You have a blockage in the horizontal drain line in the wall.
The solution would be to remove the "J bend" from the trap and send a snake up into the wall. See the images below, Thanks.

Thanks for all the help! Looks like there are more serious issues with the pipe so a large section of the pipe may need to be replaced. I really appreciate all of your help and advice!

Why do you say that? Just sounds like you need to snake the drain. You can call plumber or you can purchase a drain snake (manual of electric) and snake line yourself.

Turns out the abs pipe broke back in the wall. They had to open a hole outside my house to get to it to replace the pipe. Good thing its covered and I don't have to pay anything. I wasn't there and they already fixed it so I couldn't get pictures sorry :(

You may want to read this completely before mixing bleach and peroxide. http://www.state.nj.us/health/eoh/cehsweb/bleach_fs.pdf You can mix vinegar and baking soda with salt but watch out for anything mixed with bleach.
