Finding info about if the adoption was closed or open
My friend is wanting information on his son. We live in Ohio. At the time of his sons birth, he was incarcerated. The mother did not put his name on the birth certificate. He did get a dna test while in jail and the results proved him the father but I believe his son was already adopted. He never signed his rights away, to his knowledge. All he is trying to do is find out if the adoption is open where he could get info on his son or get his information to the adoptive parents or if it is closed. He doesn't want to take his son because the child is in a better home, he was just trying to see if he could develop a relationship with the family if they would allow it. I don't know much about adoption so if anyone could give us some helpful hints as to how we could find out. His son is 3 yrs old. Thank you.

He either had to sign his rights away, or he had to be notified that it was going to happen.

He needs to talk to his ex to find out how it happened.

If she won't give him that information, he may need to get a lawyer to find out how he was served notification on the adoption.

Most adoptions these days are open--his ex probably has contact information for his child.

He can also contact the adoption agency used.

His first step is to find out how the adoption happened without his consent, because in many states this is fraud and grounds for overturning an adoption.

Yes, it is very possible they may not have done the adoption fully proper and don't want him to know, but he will not know without a review of the legal material, again he should know if he was notified of the adoption, that may have been why the DNA test, to prove he was the father, so he could sign his rights away, or could ignore and lose them for not responding to the material sent
