What is an alternative to a 401K
I want to start a retirement account and my company doesn't offer a 401K plan. I know my option is either a traditional or ROTH IRA, but I was wondering if these accounts allow you to contribute funds from your paycheck like how they do with 401K's? And if so... where can I can I sign up (I know of t.rowe and scottrade, anything else?)

Unless your company offers a retirement savings plan, then you can't save by payroll deduction. However, most companies allow for direct deposit of your paycheck and most banks allow for automatic transfers of funds. So you could set something up that, when you paycheck is deposited some of it is transferred into your IRA.

As for which companies to look into that offer the automatic contribution service that ScottGem talked about - basically all of the major providers of IRAs do so. In addition to T. Rowe Price and Scott Trade you may want to look into Vanguard and Fidelity - they both have an incredibly wide range of low cost investment options. Stay away from any funds that carry a load, and by all means do not fall into the trap of buying an annuity in your IRA.
