This is a young adult book that was a female narrator in high school with an older brother and a single father. She is dealing with the homophobia of the school (she is not herself a lesbian, but the most popular girl in school and one of the narrator's friends are lesbians and caught kissing the in girl's bathroom) and she is dealing with her distant boyfriend (who is actually in a band and surprises her on her birthday by having the band play at her house). I don't remember much about this book but I remember that it was a frank discussion about sexuality, and encouraged open-mindedness for high schoolers. For example, the narrator asks her father what would he think of her if she was a lesbian. The father says that he would feel a little sad because she wouldn't have the enjoyment of a traditional family but the father would love her no matter what.
