    Hp 550 Laptop problem
I have a power problem. If the computer is plugged into the adapter and the power button is pushed the fan will start for 2 or 3 seconds and then shut down. It will continue to do this continuously as long as it is plugged in. I turned it on the other night and it was still going off and on the next morning. If it is on battery power it will only do this on time. Any ideas what is wrong?

I agree with Grant but I feel the second part is a little bias. How can one individual say something happens a lot to a product shipped worldwide, among millions of people.

    Anyway, maybe I'm just tired.

I apologize about the comment, but I know for a fact the HP 550's have that problem. I work as a middle man between a large IT retailer and Large suppliers. (ACER, HP, DELL, SONY, MAC, LENOVO, Packard Bell... )

So I get to see all the unit that come back and their problems.

I have read you post. All you say is the fan turns on for 2-3 seconds then shuts down. You dpo not say whether you're talking about the fan or the PC.

You begin the post by talking about the fan, and continue throughout the post referring to "it" turning on and off. I am lead to believe you're still referring to the fan. We do not make assumptions here, we go by the info provided by the OP.

Does the PC start or not?

The PC does not start. The fan comes on for 2-3 seconds the goes off. If the PC is plugged into the AC adapter it does this does this over and over without the start button being pushed again. If not on the AC adapter it will only do it once. If you push the start button it will do it again .

This could be a few things.

AC Adapter, memory needs re-seating, bad CPU, CPU needs re-seating etc...

Have you tried re-seating the memory, have you checked the AC Adapter making sure it works?

I have reseated all components. The AC adapter appears to work as the light on computer comes on to indicate charging.
