Problem with compressor on Goodman SSZ14 Heat Pump
In April, I had two 3.5 ton Goodman SSZ14 heat pumps installed. From the begenning, periodically the compressor fails to start and the inside circulator only blows room temperature air. The installer and the supplier have been here several times and have done the following: added a hard start to each compressor, replaced a capacitor on each compressor, checked and maybe re-connected the thermostats. The second floor unit seems to be working OK now but the ground floor unit compressor has failed to start twice in the past week.
When the problem occurs, the inside circulator will come on and begin blowing air but the compressor never kicks in. If I switch the unit off at the thermostat and turn it back on an hour later, everything works correctly. The system may work correctly for a week before the problem happens again. I would appreciate any tips you can offer for my next visit to the installer.

Something's not right. At 3 months old they shouldn`t be needing a hard start . Tell us did they install new line sets (2 copper lines) from condenser to evaporater? Did they install new matching evaporater coils?

Yes, everything was installed new. The inside circulating unit was matched to the compressor, new line sets installed, pressure checked at compressor several times. Problem has been there since day one.2nd floor unit has worked correctly for a month.

Complete service manual for your unit here.

Have the installer install a Tattle Tale device on the low voltage circuit on the contactor or other control devices in the outside unit. If he or his supplier does not know what the device is then they will need to get an education.

    Available at Johnstone
NOTE these are ONE time use devices. Cheaper to buy but costly over time since they are one time usage then you can toss them in the garbage can.
    Johnstone part number B12-015 Diversitech TT-24 TT-24 3PK TATTLETALE

The above is for 24 volt control circuits and will trip to show a low voltage control fault. They are also available in 120 and 240 volt models.

Another company called Wagner makes a reusable one that is good for voltages from 24 to 460.

TC007 Wagner TC007 Chek-It Control CheckerCosts more BUT you can use them over and over. I use these in class at the university where I teach Agratis (as in for free).

A lifetime tool for monitoring and checking safety controls and operating controls.
One unit for all voltages 24-460 VAC or DC without switching dials or meters. Compact, 4 oz, reliable. Saves troubleshooting.
For normally closed controls, 007 connects in parallel with safety control. When the safety control opens in response to a problem in the system, 007 red LED turns on and remains on until reset manually. With intermittent problem, the LED remains on indicating the control is open. For operating controls, 007 verifies the status of all types indicating if there is power to the holding coil, the NC contact is open or closed, the thermostat contacts are open or closed, there is power to the contactor or starting holding coil, the overloads are open or closed, or there is a bad connection either on control or power side.

•Features battery check and reset switch
    •Includes 9-volt battery
•007 may be used over and over
    •U.S. Pat. No. 4,092,625

NOTE: Make sure they installed the REAL factory hard start kit. It will have a separate relay and capacitor, Be sized for your specific units compressor, use a real 3 wire hookup NOT a 2 wire hook up like the after market ones. The style units that use 2 wire hookups can be a problem with your units model number.

Another note: The hard start kit Goodman recommends for your unit is a CSR-U-2. This is made by an old contact of mines company. It is called a 5 2 1 Compressor saver.

Did you ever determine the cause? I am having the same issue with my Goodman system... also recently installed.
