I assume you mean in a business setting?

    * When answering, always state your company and your name (never make them have to ask "who is this?")
    * Say "pardon me" or "I'm sorry?" if you can't hear them
    * Smile when you speak (it CAN be heard on the phone)
    * Say, "Can you please hold?" instead of "Hold on a minute"
    * If the person they are calling for is out of the office or on the phone with someone else, it is always better to say, "I'm sorry, he/she's unavailable right now, may I help you with something?" You can often avert an additional phone call if you can assist them with the question instead of taking a message and/or asking them to call back.
