Can we get sick from smelling sewage? Sewage is outside my window
Plumbers are fixing pipes but can not continue until inspector comes out. This is disgusting because there is raw sewage outside my bedroom window where they dug one of the holes. It smells really bad & when you walk into bedroom it smells like poop! We thought it was our shoes, but today was very hot & we realized it was coming from right outside! My husband & I had been sick this week with headache, nausea, dizziness. We thought we had a virus, but now I don't know if it from the stuff outside. Anyone have any advice?

How long until the inspector comes out? You might consider getting a hotel room for a few days if needed. But there really shouldn't be raw sewage left around anywhere. At a minimum it should have been covered up.

I do not know when he will come out, maybe Wed. I do not know why but they did leave it outside since Tuesday & they will come back Monday to pump it out. It was covered with a piece of plywood but not sealed. I went outside today & I can see what is out my bedroom window. We are leasing this house & the owner is not willing to pay for that even though we have paid him 1300 every month! Not sure what to do. My husband, my son, & I have felt nauseous this week & I have had a terrible headache. I thought it was a virus but now I do not know if the stuff outside is making us sick!

    Hi, cindyy!

The owner is not willing to pay for what specifically, please?

    Thanks!

He is paying for the plumbing repairs because he filed an insurance claim. He will not pay for a hotel. We discovered the breaks in the pipes after 3 months of smelling something awful. The owner finally came out after I demanded he come out. The plumbers came with camera mid March, insurance adjuster came out last day of March. Repairs did not start until May 12th, piping was replaced Tuesday & now we have to wait for inspector. I know it's a process but I did not know until yesterday that they left the raw sewage outside our bedroom window!

The adequate protection of the residents should be part of the normal course of the plumbing repairs. Wouldn't you think so also?

I do think so also. The mortgage company came out & left their card, I will call them tomorrow. I will also call the plumbers & if the owners do not help I will figure something else out. So, I guess we can get sick from what we are smelling. Thanks for your input.

Your husband, yourself and your son are already getting sick because of the smell!

I would also think that the plumbers would realize what something like this could do for their reputation!

I'm glad that you've been in contact with a number of entities. However, if it were me, I would be putting the pressure on the plumbers to fix the problem for the sake of your health and for the sake of their reputation.

    Thanks!

ANother thing is that if the owner is going through his insurance then most have a claus in it for loss of use. Meaning it should cover hotel costs when the residence is in unreasonable condition. This sounds unreasonable to me.

Let me address your original complaint,
there is raw sewage outside my bedroom window where they dug one of the holes
Purchase a bag of Quick Lime from your garden center and spreads it over the sewerage.
    Good luck, Tom
