Black is a very stubborn color to lift out of hair. You need to bleach it out. You best go to a good hair colorist at a good salon. You'll have to spend a pretty penny, but if you try doing it yourself, you'll end up ruining your hair. Good Luck

A box of brown hair color will not make black hair brown. To go more than two shades lighter than your natural hair color requires that you lift or strip your natural color, thereby creating a base on which you can deposit a new color. Remember that black or dark hair contains some red pigment. If you want to go from black to a brown shade but without a lot of red, then you will need to pre-lighten your hair and then apply the desired color.

Bleaching it is the way to go, but the bad part about that is it is horrible for your hair. If you really tired of you hair then I guess that is the way to go.
    Good luck.

Before you bleach you could try this stuff called Color Oops. It's supposed to get out even black dye, and it is supposed to be far less damaging than bleaching (especially since yours would have to take quite a few bleachings, I'd think). I ordered some from Amazon that I'm going to try, but you can get it at Walgreens for like ten bucks if you live in the states. There are a bunch of reviews here: Color Oops Product Reviews and Ratings - Hair Color Removers/Skin Protection - Extra Strength Hair Color Remover from Walgreens Try to read as many of them as possible if you decide to try it so you have a fair idea what you're doing.

Always remember that you can't lift out hair color with another box of haircolor in a lighter shade. If you go dark... you will need to remove that color with a good Haircolor remover, and then condition before applying any new color to your hair.
